Mark Gass is a self-taught artist who was born in Kitwe Zambia, grew up in Amanzimtoti South Africa, and currently lives in Manchester UK. He mostly works in oils, ink and pencil.
Rocks. Water. Sky. Animals. Plants. When we look at the world around us, we inevitably end up looking deep into ourselves. Meditative paintings of cracked rocks that evoke deep emotions and memories linked to time, place, and identity. Who we are. Where we come from. Where we belong. Trying to capture that moment when the first drop of rain hits the cracked, parched earth. A Zulu grinding stone hollowed out by many hands, long gone. Long forgotten. Drywalls made from stones carefully selected and placed, one at a time, on top of each other. Light. Darkness. Tone. Texture. Stillness and silence caught on canvas.
